Everybody likes the bit with the tomato.

Who'd have thought it?

I wrote a scene in 'Orion Rising' where Michael and Paul, the two main characters, partake of a couple of tomatoes plucked from a vine in an underground garden. Tomatoes are important and the fact that they're growing in a world wrecked by climate change is close to miraculous.

So, it got me thinking. I have copies of 'Orion Rising' to give away. I wanted to do something other than make people tweet links to the blog to win a copy (you can tweet the link anyway, that would be very nice, thank you). I have a question and all you have to do is answer to be in with a chance of winning an e-copy of the book.

I'll pick the best two answers, or drag in a friend to pick the answers and post the winners on Wednesday, 11th April.

The Question: What is the one fruit or vegetable you'd want, if your choice was limited by extreme circumstances? No treats, chocolates, cakes, cookies, pork scratchings, chips, pizza. Just a fruit or vegetable you couldn't live without. And, why can't you live without said fruit or vegetable?

Just post your answer and email address for a chance to win a copy of 'Orion Rising'.

  1. Watermelon. Both because it's my favorite food (no, really -- it just eeks out chocolate) and for the high water content. I imagine if circumstances were that dire, hydration would also be a concern.

  3. Oh, that's a tough one...

I think I'd have to keep lettuce in my life. Don't know what I'd do without some leafy greens.

  4. Oranges. I love the juice, the taste, the fiber. Vitamin C. Just so darn god!

  5. Easy: cucumbers. I love-love-love them. Plain, dipped in stuff, made into tabbouleh; but plain wins. NOM. I grow a lot of them in the summer.

  6. Onions. No, really. They're amazingly versatile, and there was a night this last week when the mom and I were trying to think of something to make for dinner. We ran through over two-dozen options with no success because they ALL needed onions.

Not to mention they're nommy and fry up real good.

  8. I didn't even have to think twice. Tomatoes! I accept any and all, but adore beefsteaks. I love when I get any type fresh from friends' gardens. I always have some on hand. They can be raw, stewed, stuffed. They're the perfect food. I'm glad they get to survive in the book.

  10. I think it would have to be tomatoes for me as well, though strawberries would be a close second. They can be cooked so many ways, or eaten raw and just as good. Mmn.

  11. Peppers. Spicy, sweet, make your mouth numb hot - need my peppers. :D

  12. Okay, don't laugh. Peas. But not just any peas. They have to be a specific brand though. Birds eye frozen. No others compare. I'll eat them with just about every meal I can and would quite happily eat a bowl of them on their own - well, maybe with a knob of butter. yes, I know, I'm weird lol!

  14. I am fructose intolerant so I cannot think of single fruit I would want along. However, there are a few vegetables I could bring along but I would hate to be limited to just one. Then I may develop an allergy to those. It has been known to happen. Sooo I would take along cauliflower. I have never had problems with them. Probably because I do not eat them that much. There is a good reason for that.

  16. Apples. They taste wonderful, I can eat them for days on end without growing tired of them and they store amazingly well! Not to mention you can fry them with butter, sugar and cinnamon and mmm....

  17. I'm going to second onions! :) I use them in everything I cook and caramelized onions are delicious all by themselves, as are onion rings. No one will want to kiss me, but I might not care. :D
